Clashes between authorities and Tuol Kork District Security Forces with NagaWorld strikers as union representatives demand the Ministry of Labor and the Council of Ministers resolve

At least two people fainted and others were injured during clashes between authorities and Tuol Kork District Security Forces and NagaWorld strikers at the base of the 5 Makara Bridge on September 11, 2022. Yesterday, as union leaders, unions, federations, local unions and associations working in the field of labour rights in the Kingdom of Cambodia, including strikers, marched to get their Joint request from the Ministry of Labour to submit to the Council of Ministers. The purpose of submitting this Joint request is to: First, to resolve the labour dispute in NagaWorld, accept their leaders of about 15 union members to return to work with remuneration in accordance with the Labour Law and drop the charges against the leaders of 15 union activists. Second, to solve the case of dismissal of leaders and union activists in a total of 31 cases, including: 7 cases from CATU, 19 cases from C.CAWDU, 2 cases from FUFI and 1 case from the labour protection union of MLNTIM. Aperture (KAPEA).

The march was caused by a lack of response timely receipt of Joint request from the leaders of the Confederation of Unions, Confederations of Unions, Local Unions, as well as associations and strikers, decided to march to the Council of Ministers to find a solution, but along the way while they arrived at 5 Makara Bridge, the Ministry’s of Labour representative came and receive their Joint request on the spot, and promised to submit it to the Ministry for review, but he could not be reached for comments.

The demands of the strikers and the union representatives are to put the Ministry’s representatives on hold, after receiving the Joint request. Whereas, they have submitted the Joint request before, but there is still no solution, and action taken. They then proceeded to the Council of Ministers to file a Joint request for further intervention, but on the way; there was a clash at the base of the 5 Makara Bridge next to the Sokimex gas station and a barricade. Authorities did not allow union leaders and strikers to move forward. On the other hand, after the clash, the authorities opened the way and facilitated the leaders of the unions, federations, unions, local unions, including associations and strikers, marched to the Council of Ministers under the coordination of the Phnom Penh Municipal Authority and they received the Joint request from the unions to the Council of Ministers.

It should be noted that the NagaWorld Strike Group has been on strike demanding the settlement of the labor dispute between the Strike and NagaWorld Company since December 18, 2021, which has lasted for a long time until now. Negotiations with NagaWorld have taken place several times, but there is still no solution to the dispute.
