March 1, 2012, Phnom Penh- Today, The Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) held a press conference at central office in Phnom Penh to launch the 2011 Situation Report on Women and Children’s Rights. Head of the Women and Children’s Rights Section, Ms. Chhoun Chamrong presented the main points of the report to an audience of partners, donors and media and the executive summary, featured below, was distributed to attendees.

Factory Workers Shot during a Protest for Higher Wages and Better Working Conditions

Three female factory workers were shot yesterday during a protest at Svay Rieng Special Economic Zone (SEZ). One is in a critical condition and has been transferred to Phnom Penh’s Calmette Hospital. […] At 7:30am yesterday, thousands of workers from three different factories (Kaoway, Sheico and Kingmaker) gathered to demand higher wages. They also demanded that the companies stop dismissing employees who decline to work on Sundays and public holidays. As company representatives refused to engage in dialogue, the demonstration turned into a riot.

ADHOC Plays Important Role in organising National Consultation Workshop on Understanding of ASEAN and ASEAN Civil Society

Today in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee (CHRAC) hosted the National Consultation Workshop on Understanding of ASEAN and ASEAN Civil Society with a view to preparing Cambodian civil society members for the upcoming ASEAN Summit 2012, to be hosted in Cambodia. ADHOC, currently chairing CHRAC, played a large role in coordinating this event. The consultation served to further educate Cambodian Civil Society on ASEAN, and to select members of seven committees that will be responsible for organising and facilitating the ACSC/APF 2012, which will take place alongside the ASEAN Leader Summit.

Statement: Appeal for the Release of Mr. Sor Sung, Kampong Chhnang Province

On 8th December, 2011, a press conference was held at ADHOC offices in support of villagers from Kampong Chhnang province, who are calling for the release of their village representative. On 7th December, the Supreme Court in Phnom Penh held a hearing in response to calls for the overturning of the conviction of Mr. Sor Sung, who was found guilty of attempted murder by Kampong Chhnang Provincial Court in 2007.

Press Conference on Land and Forest Issues in Rattanakiry

On 8 April 2011 ADHOC hold press concerence on demand to stop land grabbing and illegal logging in Indigenous People community and on the resolution of land, forest issues and impact by Economic Land Concession in Rattanakiry office. This press conference were participated from more than 70 people from 10 indigenous people communities in Rattanakiry and other media in Rattanakiry.

Workshop on Land and Natural Resource Rights in Battambang

On 24 March 2011 ADHOC hold a workshop on land and natural resource rights in Raksmey Samaky hotel of Battambang town. This workshop was participated by 60 land victims (11 female), by local authority such as village chie, commune council, district governor, provincial authority, relevant department officers and national, international organization’s representatives. The workshop was under presidency of Mr. Thun Saray, ADHOC’s president and H.E Sieng Suthorng, deputy provincial governor in charge of land dispute resolution.
